Love Your Story
I figure with a title like this I better tell a good story. But ironically I’m not sure if I have one. I painted this in the winter of 2026. I wanted to do a painting from an old sketchbook. I chose this quick blind sketch I had done of poppies in my garden years ago. I do love poppies, I feel slightly guilty because they aren’t indigenous or attract pollinators -they are just beautiful…and…ancestral. Poppies and rosemary must have been used a lot by my ancestors because I always need them around. I find their spirits comforting and protective.
So back to the painting, I wanted to paint from a quick sketch. This painting started off quite abstract and wild but as I developed it, something calming took over and I wanted colours and atmosphere that helped me breathe. A lot of intense news was happening during the winter of 2026 and I needed that feeling of wide open space and light around me. I used Caran D’Arche watercolour crayons to get that glowy jewell tone in the sky and surrounding green. It’s also my first large piece in a few years. I like the contrast between the heavy chunky flowers and the light feathery background.
I think this painting would go well in a living room where people gather and chat with each other. It’s uplifting and protective quality would be a nice offering to guests and families. The title comes from it’s ancestral quality, we all come from stories, and to love ourselves, we must accept our families of origin and see the strengths and gifts of our ancestors.
