AFTERNOON DRAWING CLASSES WITH WATERCOLOUR IN MAHONE BAY. July 25 1-4
To register in Mahone Bay send $85 to beth@bethlenco.com. Feel free to get in touch first!
Spend an afternoon with Beth as your guide as you learn essential drawing and seeing techniques that will ignite your art practice. After years of blood, sweat, and tears, Beth has learned that there is no other way to learn to draw than to draw. But drawing can be playful and fun while you practice getting in those pencil hours. On top of the immense satisfaction you will gain by seeing results from your work, drawing clears and opens the mind allowing you more spaciousness and happiness. Beth has also found ways to “trick” the mind into letting go of its grasp for results, giving you a greater sense of ease and flow as you draw. Beth has also learned that by drawing things you love and listening to good music, your skills improve faster because you are motivated! Please join us for another year of joyful drawing.
In this 3 hour class you will learn:
A mindful and relaxing approach to drawing.
A deeper appreciation of colour and the simple beauty that is all around us. How to cultivate a consistent creative practice.
Techniques to improve your eye and drawing skills.
PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN SUPPLIES
Supply list: LOOK AT THE PHOTO. THIS IS A PICTURE OF YOUR BASIC KIT FOR ALL CLASSES. DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THAT BRAND OF PAINT OR PAPER, BUT IN GENERAL THIS IS IT:
PENCIL,
SHARPENER,
BRUSH,
PAINTBOX,
MIXED MEDIA PAPER. SPEND YOUR MONEY ON PAPER!
Extended Details for people new to this:
A medium sized mixed media sketch book of around 98lb paper weight OR HEAVIER. 9 × 12, 8 x 10, or 5 x 8.
A few pencils and pens to draw with. You can also bring other various drawing media: -graphite sticks, water soluble graphite, Woodys 3 in 1, coloured pencils, etc…
A set of watercolours in pans, or tubes with at least the 3 primaries red yellow blue. A white dish for mixing.
Two small containers for holding water.
A brush or two. Large for washes and smaller for flower details. Size 8 round with a pointed tip is an ideal medium sized brush and will work for all the exercises. Pentel water brushes also work well for this.
NOTE:
IN MY SHORTER CLASSES WE WILL BE WORKING WITH FLOWER AND/OR STILL LIVE THEMES INDOORS. THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM IS PAPER! Please do not buy Dollar Store paper, it will not work for this class. My favourite paper for all the exercises I teach is Canson Mixed Media. 7 × 10 is a good size. On the South Shore: Art supplies are sold at Deserres in Halifax, Printer’s Corner in Blockhouse or Whimsy and Wildthings in Lunenburg. Printer’s Corner has a brand called Prism Studio which makes a 98lb mixed media sketchbook and I tried it out and it’s great.

I am excited to offer this brand new class in Chester this September. Some of you know I am most an acrylic painter. I was educated in oils but many years later when I acquired a parrot I had to switch. because of switching to acrylics later in life I needed to learn a whole new method of painting. I also wanted my acrylics to look like oils as much as possible.
In this class I will share with you some key points I have learned on how to make a beautiful painting in acrylic that glows. Acrylics are tricky and they can easily look dull and flat, but I have some tricks for you! There is SO MUCH to painting, and it takes years of practice to get anywhere close to the results you want, which can be super frustrating. I have learned to enjoy the process and celebrate tiny wins. Self kindness goes a long way, so does good practices based on skilled observation. I’ll get you started so you can enjoy the process and be proud of what you create!
Stay tuned for a YouTube video where I will talk more about what you need to bring to this class!
